Measure your reading speed with Rapid Serial Visual Presentation technology
Start Free RSVP Test →An RSVP test (Rapid Serial Visual Presentation) measures your reading speed by displaying words one at a time in a fixed location on your screen. This eliminates eye movement - one of the biggest bottlenecks in traditional reading - allowing you to read faster while maintaining comprehension.
Unlike traditional reading where your eyes move across lines of text, RSVP technology presents words sequentially in the same spot. This technique can help you read 2-3x faster than your normal reading speed.
When you read normally, your eyes don't glide smoothly across the page. They make a series of quick jumps called saccades, pausing briefly between each one in what's called a fixation, which is the only moment you're actually absorbing text (Rayner, 1998). Your eyes also frequently jump backward to re-read words, a habit called regression.
RSVP removes saccades from the equation entirely. Since each word appears in the exact same spot, your eyes never have to search for where to look next, and there's nothing to regress back to since the previous word is already gone. What's left is pure fixation time, which is the part of reading that actually processes meaning.
It's worth being precise about what this buys you: RSVP removes the mechanical cost of eye movement, not the cognitive cost of understanding. Comprehension still depends on how familiar and complex the material is, which is exactly why this test pairs every passage with a comprehension quiz instead of reporting raw speed alone.
Our RSVP test unlocks faster speeds as you prove you can maintain comprehension at your current one:
| WPM Range | Tier | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 0-299 | Beginner | Starting tier, everyone begins here |
| 300-399 | Intermediate | Comfortably above the ~238 WPM average adult reading speed |
| 400-499 | Advanced | Strong RSVP performance with maintained comprehension |
| 500-599 | Expert | Well into speed-reading territory |
| 600-800 | Master | Elite tier, most readers never reach this speed |
| 801-1500 | GOD TIER | Custom speeds for the fastest readers on the platform |
Note: you unlock each tier by scoring 4/5 or better on the comprehension quiz at your current speed, so the tier you reach reflects real reading ability, not just how fast you can click through words.

RSVP stands for Rapid Serial Visual Presentation. It shows text one word at a time in a single fixed spot on the screen, so your eyes never move. Removing that eye movement lets most people read noticeably faster than they do on a normal page.
RSVP reliably removes the mechanical cost of eye movement and re-reading, which is why speeds go up. It does not remove the cognitive work of understanding, so comprehension still drops on hard or unfamiliar material past a certain speed. That is why this test pairs every passage with a comprehension quiz.
The average adult reads around 238 words per minute. On RSVP, 300 to 400 WPM with strong comprehension is solid, 400 to 600 is advanced, and 600 or more is expert territory. The honest number is effective WPM, your speed multiplied by your comprehension score.
Yes. After signing in you can paste any article or document into the custom text mode and read it RSVP style at a speed you set. The test itself uses built-in passages so it can score your comprehension.
Yes, it is completely free and no account is required. Signing in is optional and only adds the global leaderboard, custom text mode, and progress that syncs across devices.
You choose a target words-per-minute speed, read a passage at that pace, then answer five comprehension questions. The result shows your WPM, your comprehension percentage, and your effective WPM.
